Welcome to Brand My Career!
I’m Mike Weibel, I live and work in Dallas, Texas and I created this website on June 1, 2016 to provide advice, instruction and suggestions you can use to help you establish your online presence, and brand, the right way. It’s not that hard to do, and the benefits can change or alter the course of your career.
Career development and growth have changed in the past 10 years or so. Until recently, job seekers or even people considering an upgrade would simply upload their resume to a job board (CareerBuilder, Monster.com, etc) and wait for companies with positions to fill to call or email.
However, today there are estimates that the average online job posting receives 250 or more resumes submitted. It’s become very difficult to stand out in the crowd using that approach.
Personal branding is not exactly a new idea: “Think about what people are doing on Facebook today. They’re keeping up with their friends and family, but they’re also building an image and identity for themselves, which in a sense is their brand. They’re connecting with the audience that they want to connect to. It’s almost a disadvantage if you’re not on it now. ” ~ Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook
One thing all employers do now, however, is go to their favorite search engine to research the people they are considering for a position. They check your Facebook page, your LinkedIn page, and other social media posts you may have made and look to see if you have posted other information on the web related to your professional activities.
It’s not hard to see why (a) not showing up in Google at best leaves a gap in your profile, and (b) why creating your own online personal brand for your career, skills and expertise makes perfect sense.
